I've decided it's time to get my very own sewing machine but with so many options out there I have no idea where to begin. I don't want anything too fancy or complicated just something that will get the job done (I'm seeing lots more sewing in the future!). I've used Mum's Janome so I'm thinking that's a starting point but any advice you may have will be very happily taken on board.

No advice on the sewing machine. I found mine on someone's lawn in hard rubbish and it works a treat. It's a Janome too.

I have just started down the sewing world track!!! I bought a bernini 92c. i love it and it is so simple to use...check it out...goodluck with your choices...
I also have a Bernina 'Bernette' model. Super easy to use and has some cool automatic stitches built in....
I have a basic Janome which has been fantastic to learn with....but now I wish I had something much better!

I have one that was given to me for my 18th birthday - and I'm now 34. It's serviced every three or four years and has served me well. I guess try and avoid too many bells and whistles. I have only ever used straight, zig zag and the buttonhole stitches. I have long forgotten what all the other ones do.
I have just bought a Pfaff expression 2 to do quilting and other sewing. It's wonderful. I saw a demo at the Craft & Quilt fair. They have show specials.
I got a Janome too - I decided all I needed was straight, zigzag, and a walking foot - plus the ability to drop the feed dogs so that I could do some free-motion mucking around. Simple is good, so I got their quilter's basic model. Very happy I am with it, too!
I have a basic Brother and it is very good for all my craft work, dress making and quilting
I use a Brother, it's about 8 years old, and hasn't missed a beat!
This is very interesting. I just recently posted almost the same question. And like here, Janome is top of the recommended list. Interested to know what you eventually bought.
